Homelessness alive and well

Homelessness is alive and well in Long Eaton, Ilkeston, Sandiacre, Stapleford, Beeston, Chilwell, Sawley, Cotmanhay, Toton, across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

The numbers of homeless people is rising and will continue to rise in the months and years ahead.

No one chooses to be homeless but it can be the fate that awaits anyone.

Homelessness leads to a rapid physical and emotional decline which proves very difficult if not impossible to escape or recover from. Isolation and social exclusion soon become a reality. Life has no purpose, no hope, no perceived future.

Sleeping rough is, thankfully, not an experience we can comprehend. The factors which often triggers homelessness are, however, potentially familiar to everyone – family rows, family breakdown, divorce, drink, drugs, missed education, loss of job, or health problems.

All of these issues are made worse by the current economic climate. It would be wonderful if the service and support the Canaan Trust provides were not needed but it is and more urgently than ever.
